SIMONE SHOOT #001 - 16TH MARCH
This shoot was initially proposed as kind of exploration as to where my ideas are set to go as the shoot was still quite early in the researching phase of my project. Prior to this shoot i had been heavily influenced by Rei Kawakubo's work under Comme des Garcons, the two inspiration images shown display her use of clashing edgy sort of punk like styling with formal wear such as classic suit and tie. I was quite fascinated with this idea as it collided two uncertainties, so i was definitely assured as to what the premise of my shoot would focus on. With the idea of this novelty shoot i then took it into the studio. the decision to black out the left tooth was also remotely inspired by Comme des Garcons, more specifically the laughing child on the cover of France Grands fashion memoir, so i decided to include it within my work as subtle homage. Something i've noticed about myself is that i never seem to take my shoots seriously, i feel the more outlandish the better in terms of styling, props, and overall presentation, i also think that approaching your work too seriously often leads to disappointed, at least in my case anyway. The images were shot on a standard Canon DSLR, but was later inspired with mixing digital images with the darkroom facilities in college.

ANALYZING MY OWN WORK:
The thing i find most interesting about this image of mine is the crossover between digital and analog photography, imitating the grain and gritty feeling that's common when printing film. Looking at the piece the model is seen holding up the banana as a mobile phone, and i can confirm this absolutely no meaning in the slightest. A lot of my images tend to come from impromptu moments happening on set and i think this piece is a distinct example of that. As I've stated previously, the choice to have the models left tooth blacked out was one born in inspiration from the Comme des Garcons fashion memoir cover, there was something i wasn't quite able to put my finger on about the laughing child but it resonated with me, and most importantly, it inspired me. One thing was certain when heading into this shoot, i didn't want the model to look regular, as a typical model would, i like having fun in twisting the boundaries i can push between me and my models and actually looking back i don't think I've ever done a typical standard beauty style shoot. I guess an overall inspiration within the style and editing was the album cover of Fleetwood Macs 'Rumours', as its clean background and excessive contrast suggest. I've always found the cover to be visually striking due to it's empty surrounding and looming focal points, i definitely think you can see where the inspiration lies within my own image. |
